We don’t agree with CAF on lots
What a way to be booted out of a tournament! We think the Confederation of African Football (CAF) has not been fair to Mali by eliminating its national football team from the 2015 African Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournament in Equatorial Guinea through the casting of lots.
Yesterday, the Malians had to give way to Guinea to progress to the quarter-final stage of the tournament, although they lost no game at the tournament.
The reason was that both the Guinean and the Malian teams were neck and neck on points and goals after the group stage and the two incidentally drew in their final group game.
According to CAF, the tossing of the coin to determine the team to progress to the next stage was a rule of the competition, which it was employing.
We are, however, dismayed that such a very old law is still being used by CAF to determine which team progresses in a very competitive tournament.
