Tourism sector boards inaugurated

The reconstituted boards of the Ghana Tourism Authority (GTA) and the Ghana Tourism Development Company (GTDC) have been inaugurated in Accra and charged with the responsibility to make the sector a lead contributor to the economy.

The 11-member board of the GTA comprises Messrs Akunu Dake as Chairman, Abdulai Sidiki, Samuel Dartey, Sampson Donkoh, Kwame Ofosu Bamfo, David Nana Anim and D.S Amlalo.

Others are Mrs Clariet Ofori Anyinam, Mrs Magdalene Apenteng, Dr Esther Ofei Aboagye and Dr Joel Sonne.

The GTDC board, chaired by Mr Edem Kpodo, has Ms Kalsoume Sinare Baffoe, Dr Benjamin Amoah and Messrs Aaron Amuni, Kwei-Mensah Ashidam and Samuel Atta Mills as members.

Inauguration

At a brief inaugural ceremony, the Minister of Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts, Mrs Elizabeth Ofosu-Adjare, indicated that while the sector had contributed significantly to the development of the economy, it needed to contribute far more than that.

Mrs Ofosu-Adjare reminded the board members that the recent realignment of the Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts by the government had given the sector a new policy direction in terms of mandate, vision, mission and goals.

She, therefore, urged the boards to initiate action plans to ensure that the set mission was successfully accomplished.

She outlined challenges facing the sector to include inadequate infrastructure at tourism sites, limited investment and the need for quality service at some tourism facilities.

Board

On behalf of the GTA, Mr Akunu Dake thanked President John Mahama for giving them the opportunity to contribute their quota to the development of the country.

He said the tourism sector had the potential of influencing the development of the other sectors of the economy and pledged his outfit’s commitment to work assiduously to promote the sector.

For his part, Mr Edem Kpodo said the GTDC appreciated the importance of the sector to the economy and promised that members of the board would bring their expertise to bear on the work of the company to promote its growth.

He called for the ministry’s cooperation to make their tenure successful.
