Phase 2 of Ada sea defence wall to be completed 2014

The second phase of the Ada sea defence wall, which will cover 10km of coastal land, will commence in January, 2014 .

The four-year project, costing $165,000, when completed, will protect the buildings and properties of  the indigenes living close to the sea from the ravages of the sea tide.

Mr Paolo Fulvio, the site engineer with Dredging International Services Limited , the company executing the project, told the media during a tour of the project that the first phase of the project, which began in January, 2012,  was completed in August, 2013 at a cost of $60,000.

The first phase, he explained, involved the construction of an armour rock groyne over a five-kilometre coastal land.

According to him, upon completion of the second phase, the  entire sea defence wall will cost  $225,000.

As part of the project, he said, storm barriers would be constructed for the protection of  the inhabitants.

Benefits of the projects

The defence wall serves other purposes. For instance a reclaimed stable coastline and a beach for tourists is projected to be a source of tourist attraction.

When completed, the project would also facilitate fishing and commercial activities in the area.

The project will also lead to the stabilisation of the coastal lines and the beaches to minimise the risk of flooding in the area.

Site tour

The Deputy Minister of Water Resources, Works and Housing in charge of Housing, Mr Vincent Oppong Asamoah, who toured the project site, expressed satisfaction at the work done.

Mr Asamoah said with the work done so far, he was hopeful that the second phase would be completed in due time.

He described the site as a tourist attraction, and called on investors from the hospitality industry to come on board and invest at the site.

Challenges

The project had not been  without challenges, said Mr Fulvio.

Some of the challenges, he recounted, were unfavourable whether conditions, problems with logistics and issues related with the organisation of the work.

Mr Fulvio was, however, happy  that despite all the challenges, the first phase was completed on time, and was hopeful that the second phase would also be completed before schedule.
