Tagoe: Hand injury forced withdrawal from Davis clash

A former International Boxing Organisation (IBO) lightweight champion, Emmanuel ‘Gameboy’ Tagoe, has said he opted out of a scheduled bout with American Keyshawn Davis due to a hand injury.

Tagoe explained that he felt unprepared for the fight with Davis after realising he was yet to heal fully from the injury.

The Ghanaian boxer withdrew from their 10-round lightweight bout, which was scheduled for Prudential Centre in Newark, New Jersey on April 8.

Opening up on the reasons that led to the cancellation of the bout, Tagoe said he was not interested in going in for just the money but rather preferred to put his best foot forward in all his fights.

“I was approached to fight Keyshawn Davis last April but I opted out of the bout because of a hand injury from my previous fight.

“Money is not the only motivation for me whenever I enter the ring because it is important to give your best at all times,” Tagoe told Med Sports TV.

Tagoe (32-2, 15 KOs), who went the 12-round distance with heavy-handed Ryan Garcia (23-1, 19 KOs) last April 9 at Alamodome in San Antonio, agreed to face Davis late in January.

The 34-year-old later pulled out of the fight with Davis fighting Anthony Yigit instead in a bout he won by a technical knockout.

The Ghanaian is yet to return to the ring in over a year since last losing a unanimous decision to Ryan Garcia, last year.
