Journalists undergo golf course

The Ghana Golf Association (GGA) has taken sports journalists through the theoretical aspect of the game at a seminar at the Accra Stadium to ensure accurate reporting of golf events.

A course instructor, Michael Aggrey, a golf expert and vice-president of the GGA  who explained the terminologies of the sport to the media men, said a club was the instrument used to strike a golf ball and not a stick as it is mistakenly known.

He explained how different types of clubs were used for different purposes at each stage of a game.

According to him, a “driver” was the longest club used to tee a ball and the shortest club is known as the “putter” and used for short distances.

The veteran golfer stated that holes entered in the sport were nine and 18.  The nine, he explained, was a misnomer which could be rectified with a golfer putting the ball in a hole twice to make up for the 18 holes.

Mr Aggrey further explained that the term “handicapping” in the sport represented the number of times a golfer was allowed to hit the ball on a course. ‘’The best golfer is determined by the less handicaps he plays’’, he stated.

“A beginner is allowed about 28 handicaps, while a professional is allowed 0-7 handicaps,” he explained.

He advised sports reporters to take note of these terminologies and apply them in their reporting.

He also rejected the assertion that the sport was for the wealthy, saying that everyone could play golf.

The president of the GGA, Dr Felix K. Frempong, said golf was a healthy sport from which an individual could derive many health benefits.

Such health benefits, he stated, included the regular long distance walks on the course by players.

The event was sponsored by Dosca Travel and Tours.
