Golf: UT Bank Challenge underway
With the dawn of the UT Bank Independence Challenge at the lush course of the Cocoa Research Institute at Tafo on a rainy Independence Day (March 6), the Quest Golf Tour opened its doors to amateur scratch players as part of a bigger plan to turn them into professional golfers in preparation towards the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo.
The three-day competition drew crack golfers, including international players from Sierra Leone, Nigeria and Cote d’Ivoire.
At the close of day one, Ivorian R. Kouassi led the field with two under par (-2) jointly with our own Vincent Torgah. In joint third position was Godwin Sai, a traditional good starter, who shot one under par (-1) and Anthony Gbenyo, a surprise for joint third finisher on the leaderboard.
Victor Brae Mensah held his own at fifth position with one over par (1), same as Francis Torgah. Joint seventh place was held by Emos Koblah and Kodjo Barni.
The total field of 53 golfers will be whittled down to approximately 27 with the best vying for the UT Bank Challenge trophy at stake.
