
Africa Armwrestling President hails Kirsty Coventry’s historic election as IOC President
The President of the Armwrestling Federation of Africa (AFA), Charles Osei Asibey, has congratulated Kirsty Coventry on her election as the 10th President of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), describing her appointment as a landmark moment for global sports leadership.
In a statement, Osei Asibey lauded Coventry’s historic achievement, saying: “This is a historic moment for the Olympic Movement as the first woman, first African and the youngest to become IOC President, and we are thrilled to see a highly respected and accomplished athlete like Kirsty Coventry take the helm of the IOC.”
Coventry, a former Olympic champion and a vocal advocate for women’s empowerment and youth development, was elected as IOC President Elect during the IOC Session in Greece.
Osei Asibey highlighted her wealth of experience in the sports world, expressing confidence in her leadership. “As a former Olympic champion and a respected leader in the sports world, Kirsty Coventry brings a unique perspective and wealth of experience to the role. We are confident that her presidency will be marked by innovation, inclusivity, and a commitment to promoting the values of Olympism.”

He further noted that her tenure could create opportunities for Armwrestling to gain more global recognition. “We look forward to working closely with President Elect Coventry and the IOC to achieve our shared goals and promote the sport of Armwrestling across Africa and the world,” he added.
The Armwrestling Federation of Africa remains dedicated to expanding the sport’s presence and nurturing talent across the continent, and Osei Asibey believes Coventry’s leadership will be instrumental in advancing this mission.
