Lawson retains national super welterweight title

Musah Rahman Lawson retained his national super welterweight belt with unanimous points victory over hard-hitting Charles Lesko Sossiya in a 12-round thriller at the Bukom Boxing Arena in Accra last Saturday.

The bout was the main card of the second fight night of the Ghana Professional Boxing League including professional, amateur and juvenile fights.

It was the first defence of the title 28-year-old Lawson won in October last year, but he was made to sweat for victory with the judges scoring it 110-117, 110-116 and 108-118.

Lawson had the fight under control right from the first round as he patiently dominated the rounds and did not appear too eager to knock out his opponent even when he was in trouble. Occasionally, Sossiya would land some body shots and got the champion on the back foot to the delight of the crowd.

In the eighth round, the champion dropped Sossiya under a barrage of shots but he beat the count and continued to soldier on before he caught Lawson with a surprise punch to the chin which forced him to kiss the canvas in the 10th round. It was the wakeup call the champion needed as he took charge of the remaining rounds and wore down his opponent who displayed a big heart to survive 12 gruelling rounds.

After being decorated with the title belt by Ghana boxing chief, Abraham Kotei Neequaye, Lawson was again declared the best professional boxer of the night and received a 32-inch TCL television set as his prize.

There were other prizes for the best and outstanding amateur boxer who received a school bag and standing fan from Imax Electronics.
Other fights

In other fights, Benjamin Tetteh of Akotoku Academy and Joshua Barnor of Palms Springs Gym fought to a draw in a lightweight contest, followed by a fifth round technical knockout victory by Stephen Abbey of Seconds Out Gym over Kwame Kumakuwe of The Gym in a six-round cruiserweight contest.

Elvis Ahorgah of Fit Square Gym stopped Hamed Mohammed of CQB Foundation via a technical knockout in their six-round super middle weight clash, while Daniel Oduro of Attoh Quarshie Gym could not go beyond the first round after being dropped by Alidu Suleman of Black Panthers in the opening round of their encounter.

On a night of knockouts, John Quaye of Sea View Gym stopped Nje Saotu of Wisdom Gym in the second round of their super featherweight clash.

There were other exciting juvenile and amateur fights which were each declared draws to encourage the young boxers.

After two fight nights, Sonia Gym, Sea View Gym and Fit Square Gym are tied on six points but Sonia lead the 12-team lwague table on account of two TKO victories.
