Ike Quartey: I stopped boxing promotion due to losses

Ike ‘Bazooka’ Quartey says he stopped promoting boxing bouts in the country due to his inability to make gains from the venture.

The former World Boxing Association (WBA) welterweight titlist described boxing promotion in Ghana as bad business which had the tendency of draining investors.

The legendary fighter incorporated Jumos Promotions after his career to help create opportunities for upcoming boxers but lost interest at a point.

Pouring his frustration in an interview with Graphic Sports, Quartey said he decided not to invest all his money in boxing promotion without recouping it.

“I was promoting fights because I wanted to help develop the sport but I wasn’t making anything out of it,” he explained.

“It was a bad business for me so I lost interest in it. I don’t want to end up investing all my money in boxing promotion without making gains,” Quartey concluded.

The tough-talking ex-boxer blamed his waning love for the sport on lack of talented fighters in the country.

Quartey, however, gave an assurance that his love for boxing promotion could be revived when credible fighters emerged from a well-planned amateur system.

“Sometimes you are moved to invest in getting talented boxers to the top but as it stands now, we don’t have good fighters.

“Our amateur system is dead and we don’t have good amateur fighters. All these factors discouraged me from investing in boxing promotion,” he pointed out.
