GBA, Trust Emporium to petition govt on boxing return

The Ghana Boxing Authority (GBA) and Trust Sports Emporium are planning to petition the government on the need to ease restrictions on boxing events in the country.

According to the GBA, the two bodies were putting together a complete guide on how to ensure all COVID-19 safety protocols would be adhered to during fight nights to make a case for the return of boxing in the country.

There is a ban on contact sports in the country since March following the government’s decision to control the spread of the coronavirus.

However, the government’s COVID-19 team, led by Dr Anthony Nsiah-Asare, met with the National Sports Authority (NSA) and the leadership of the various sporting federations and requested for safety guidelines to be considered.

However, in an interview with the Graphic Sports, the General Secretary of the GBA, Patrick Johnson, said they were close to sending the petition to the presidency for consideration.

Mr Johnson revealed that the management of the Trust Sports Emporium, which houses the Bukom Boxing Arena, had submitted its safety guidelines to the GBA for consideration.

This, he said, would be added to the GBA’s petition to the government in the coming days to seek the green light to start staging bouts in the country.

“We are yet to submit the petition to the government but everything is in order. The management of the Trust Sports Emporium sent us their safety guidelines on how to keep the Bukom Boxing Arena safe for bouts,” Mr Johnson said.

“We are almost done with ours so we can add up and petition the government to give us the green light to start staging bouts,” he added.

Meanwhile, the GBA is looking at relying on television coverage for boxing bouts should the government lift the ban on their operations.
