Probe ‘brutalities’ - Speaker tells IGP

The Speaker of Parliament, Mr Edward Doe Adjaho, has asked the Inspector-General of Police, Mr Mohammed Ahmed Alhassan, to investigate the alleged police brutalities in Kenyase on February 3, 2014 and report back to the House within two weeks.

Mr Adjaho gave the order after the Member of Parliament for Kwabre East, Mr Frimpong, had made a statement in the House alleging that the police brutalised residents of Kenyase who held a demonstration to draw attention to the bad nature of the roads in the area.

The MP said the demonstration was only to press home their demand for good roads and that the demonstrators were unarmed.

He added that personnel of the Buffalo Unit of the Ghana Police  Service exhibited “extreme force” and used tear gas, live and rubber bullets in an attempt to quell the demonstration.

Mr Frimpong stated also that a basic school in the area was raided and tear gas canisters fired into the compound.

Some schoolchildren, as a result of the firing of tear gas, collapsed while some teachers were traumatised.

He said the 90-year-old chief of Kenyase, who had not witnessed such brutalities before also suffered a lot of trauma.

“Nothing justifies the use of brute force by the police in this particular case,” he said, and called on the IGP to “bring the perpetrators to book.”
