NPP's Special Electoral College proceeds smoothly

Voting in the New Patriotic Party's Special Electoral College has proceeded peacefully across designated voting centres across the country.

Reports from the centres indicate that in some instances, voting has already ended or is nearing completion to await the counting of ballots at 3:00pm. {youtube}http://youtu.be/PLvga1iBHAs{/youtube}

The exercise is to reduce the number of persons interested in contesting the party's flagbearer race from seven to a maximum of five in keeping with the party's constitution.

Dr. Kofi Konadu Apraku, Stephen Asamoah Boateng, Francis Addai-Nimoh, Kofi Osei-Ameyaw, Alan Kwadwo Kyerematen, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and Joe Ghartey are the candidates.

Those who make the five slots will contest again in mid-October to elect a candidate for Ghana's general elections in 2016.

In all 787 delegates are voting in today's exercise and each delegate can only vote for one person contrary to earlier perception that a delegate would have to vote for five of the aspirants on the ballot. Prof. Mike Oquaye, who is Chairman of the party's Constitutional and Legal Committee, has issued a statement to explain the process and to discount the earlier claim.

At the party's headquarters at Asylum Down in Accra and the Osu Presby School compound which are the two designated voting centres in the Greater Accra region, the exercise has been very smooth except for a couple of disputed proxy voting.

At Osu, a group of youth wearing Nana Akufo-Addo branded T-shirts were on hand just outside the confines of the voting area playing 'jama' songs and proclaiming him the ultimate winner.
