NDC women’s organiser organises health screening at Bukom
The Deputy National Women's Organiser of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Dr Catherine Deynu, has launched a free mobile health screening and enlightenment programme for residents of the Odododiodoo Constituency and its environs in the Greater Accra Region.
The programme, dubbed, " DR-DR NDC”, attracted a large turnout of both the old and the young at Bukom, a predominantly fishing community.
Speaking to the residents before the launch in Accra, Dr Deynu said the free health screening was an intervention for both the sick and the healthy, saying, “It should not be when one is sick alone that one should visit the hospital. This will afford one the opportunity of detecting any problem early.”
She said residents of Odododiodoo were the first to benefit from the excercise and explained that the exercise would be replicated in all the constituencies in the region, noting, “he impact would be long-lasting.”
The deputy national women's organiser noted that many people had ailments they were not aware of, but when they were tested, they were advised on what to do and the drugs to take to improve their health.
She also indicated that "DR-DR NDC" was a way to give back to the society to re-inforce the social democratic philosophy of NDC and also create awareness about health.
Basic health care
The free health screening team, Dr Deynu noted, only offered the basic health services which included eye tests, blood pressure, blood sugar, malaria, fever, among other mild ailments, and also gave medical advice on serious illnesses.
She added that those found to have conditions that required specialist care would be asked to go to hospital for further care.
According to her, over 1,500 persons are projected to benefit from the programme in each constituency across the region before the December 7 general election.
Giving health advice to the residents, Dr Deynu said living sedentary lifestyle, smoking and excessive alcohol intake were some reasons people ended up with diseases such us diabetes and hypertension.
Although diseases such as hypertension and diabetes take a long time before they manifest, she said it was important that Ghanaians, especially the youth, equipped themselves with information on how best to modify their lifestyles and prevent them.
