The burnt office of the Ashanti Regional NDC chairman

NDC suspects arson - Regional Minister

Suspected arsonists early yesterday burnt portions of the uncompleted Ashanti Regional office of the NDC, located near the CEPS Headquarters in Kumasi.

The suspects sent five gallons of petrol to the building but could pour only one gallon into the regional chairman's office and lit it,  resulting in the fire spreading to other areas.

It burnt the windows and the furniture in the chairman's office.

Casualty

There was no casualty.

Early detection of the fire by the two security men stationed at the office saved the situation. They managed to put it out.

But for them, the fire would have razed the entire building to the ground.

The remaining four gallons full of petrol were later found around the building.

Speaking from the Amakom office of the party to the media around 2 a.m. yesterday, the Ashanti Regional Minister, Mr John Alexander Ackon, said he suspected that the fire might be politically motivated.

He said even if the arsonist had succeeded in burning the entire building, the NDC, led by President John Dramani Mahama, would still win the 2016 presidential election.

He said it was not the party office that would vote but that the good work of the President would earn him a second term in the November polls.

The Ashanti Regional Secretary of the NDC, Mr Raymond Tandoh,  said: "I smell an elephant."
