Joe Ghartey steps down from NPP flagbearership race
One of the flagbearer hopefuls in the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Joe Ghartey, has announced he will not contest Nana Akufo-Addo and the three others in the planned October congress.
Joe Ghartey survived Sunday’s Super Delegates Congress with 22 votes representing 7% of the total valid votes cast which saw Nana Addo win with an overwhelming 81%.
Despite surviving Sunday’s contest, Mr. Ghartey says he will not contest in the final congress.
The second deputy Speaker of Parliament in an interview on Sky FM is the Western Region said: “I am not going to contest in the October 17 elections; we are all going to work for the NPP to come back to power.”

When he joined the NPP flagbearership race last April, he believed he had paid his dues to the party and in public service “and I think I am ready to serve my party and the nation in the high office of President,” he said.
According to him, he could work with all factions within the party as a compromise candidate.
“The NPP at this stage needs a compromise candidate and I believe the party in broad terms is also looking for such a candidate,” he stated.
But he has made a U-turn and according to some party insiders, he is likely join the Nana Akufo-Addo camp.
