Businessman to contest chairmanship of UW Region NDC

A Wa-based businessman, Mr Abdul Nasir Sani, has declared his intention to contest the Upper West Regional Chairmanship of the National Democratic Congress (NDC). The decision of Mr Sani, who is widely known as BUNAS, comes in the wake of the declaration by Malik Issahaque, the incumbent regional chairman, that he would not seek re-election after occupying the position since 1992 when multi party democracy was re- introduced.

Speaking to the Daily Graphic, Mr Sani said he intended to contest the position to inject dynamism into the party and continue to make it more attractive to the people of the Upper West Region.

He said the gains made in the region must not be eroded, and "this therefore requires somebody like me to consolidate the gains."

He said the NDC had come a long way as a party  to become the dominant force in the region and this "must continue as long as we practise multi-party democracy."

Mr Sani said apart from mobilising more people to join the party, efforts would be made to bring together all shades of opinion in the decision-making process so that nobody would be left out.

"When elected, my administration would operate an open-door policy where criticisms would be taken in good faith and all differences healed so as to make us stronger," he added.

He urged prospective delegates to the yet-to-be-held congress to endorse his candidature by voting for him overwhelmingly, since he had what it took to add more numbers to the NDC.

Mr Sani paid tribute to the incumbent chairman, Alhaji Issahaque, for steering the affairs of the party since 1992, and expressed the hope that when the history of the NDC was being documented, the name Malik Issahaque would be written in letters of gold.

He called on the rank and file of the party in the Upper West Region to continue to rally behind the NDC, since it had brought a lot of development to the region.

Mr Sani also commended  the media for selling the prospect and potential of the region to the outside world, instead of always dwelling on its negatives.
