Alban Bagbin pledges to lead Ghana’s 9th Parliament with diligence and efficiency

Speaker of parliament, Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin has promised to bring his extensive experience to bear in leading Ghana’s 9th Parliament.

He vowed to guide the legislature with efficiency, diligence, and a commitment to upholding democracy.

“I promise to bring all these experiences to bear in guiding this house to perform its mandate with efficiency, diligence and above all with a sense of being the home of democracy in Ghana,” Mr Bagbin declared in his acceptance speech on January 7, 2025, shortly after being sworn in as Speaker by Chief Justice Gertrude Tokono.

Mr Bagbin expressed deep gratitude to the Members of Parliament (MPs) for the trust placed in him.

He acknowledged the weight of the responsibility, having served as both a long-time legislator and Speaker of the 8th Parliament during a particularly challenging hung Parliament. “I now come to the 9th Parliament not just with my background, but with four years of experience in a difficult, hung Parliament,” he said.

The Speaker, who made history as the first elected opposition MP to hold the Speaker’s position, stressed his dedication to ensuring that Parliament remains the true custodian of Ghana’s democracy.

He called on Ghanaians to engage more with the legislative process, emphasising the importance of an active and transparent Parliament for the country’s progress.

“I urge you to support your Parliament and be interested and engaged with its work,” he urged the people of Ghana, underscoring that a well-functioning Parliament is crucial for the country’s development.

The Speaker also expressed his appreciation to the National Democratic Congress (NDC), particularly former President John Dramani Mahama, for their support in recommending his candidacy.

He pledged to uphold fairness as he prepares to supervise the election of two Deputy Speakers, as required by the House’s standard orders.

“As Speaker, I will also have the honor and duty to supervise the election of two Deputy Speakers of the House, and I am committed to ensuring these elections are carried out with utmost fairness,” Mr Bagbin added.

His re-election comes at a critical juncture for Ghana, with hopes that Mr Bagbin’s leadership will continue to drive transparency, collaboration, and effective governance in the legislature.
