Spanish govt lauds Ghana for supporting bid for UN seat

The Spanish government has lauded Ghana for supporting its bid to secure a place as a member of the United Nations Security Council.

Having been admitted as a member of the Security Council, Spain has vowed to advance Africa’s cause at the Security Council, since majority of the issues discussed there concerned the continent.

The Spanish Ambassador to Ghana, Ms Maria J.  Allonso, expressed these sentiments when Vice-President Kwesi Bekoe Amissah-Arthur received her at the Flagstaff House yesterday.

The ambassador, who started her tour of duty in the country about six months ago, was at the seat of government to reiterate her country’s desire to deepen diplomatic and trade ties with Ghana and also to hold bilateral talks with the Vice-President.

The ambassador, who recalled the 47-year relations between Ghana and Spain, was optimistic that 2015 would witness a much strengthened ‘friendship’ between the two countries and that the economic and commercial ties which already were very close would be further promoted.

Trade ties

She recalled her visit to the Minister of Trade and Industry, Dr Ekow Spio-Garbrah, where the two discussed among other interventions the signing of trade agreements this year to foster closer relations between the two nations.

“Spain is interested in having a close relationship with Ghana and we need your support to make our voice heard in addressing African issues,” Ms Allonso stated.

The ambassador alluded to the Spanish general election slated for December this year and expressed optimism about her country recording improved economic performance this year, particularly after the economic crisis that the country suffered in the not too distant past.

Vice-President

Mr Amissah-Arthur applauded Spain’s support for the economy in the areas of trade, export and financial cooperation.

He was upbeat about companies of the two countries increasing business engagements among themselves to the benefit of their citizenry.
