Prez Mahama supports Kintampo accident victims

President John Mahama last Sunday presented assorted items and cash of GH¢30,000 to support the upkeep of injured victims of the Kintampo road accident.

The items included medicines, food items such as rice, cooking oil, fruits, Milo, milk, sugar and toiletries.

Of the cash, GH¢20,000 went to the Sunyani Hospital, while GH¢10,000 went to the Techiman Hospital.

Visit

President Mahama made the presentation when he visited the Techiman Holy Family Hospital and the Sunyani Regional Hospital where the injured victims of the accident are receiving treatment.

Nine people, including a young boy whose relatives are yet to be traced, are on admission at the Sunyani Regional Hospital, while six are at the Techiman Hospital.

Another six of the accident victims are on admission at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital in Kumasi.

The President, who was accompanied by the Chief of Staff, Mr Julius Debrah, and the General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Mr Johnson Asiedu Nketia, thanked the medical staff of the two hospitals for the quality care they had been offering and their handling of the injured.

Condolence

He also expressed his condolences and that of the government to the families of the 61 people who lost their lives in the accident.

President Mahama commended the doctors and other health personnel for the able manner in which they were handling the injured victims.

Promise

He reiterated his promise that the government would support the injured victims to recover and expressed joy at the recovery rate of the victims.

He said the fact that Ghana was among the 10 leading accident-prone countries in Africa posed a challenge to transport organisations and the police to sit up to ensure safety on the roads.

“All this means we should take a serious view of our driving,” he said.

He noted that many drivers took advantage of the good roads to speed, leading to accidents.
