Northern Regional House of Chiefs to dispose of cases
The Northern Regional House of Chiefs has pledged its commitment to dispose of cases pending before it to ensure lasting peace for accelerated development in the area.
The house, however, acknowledged that before it could achieve such an objective, it would need the support of all stakeholders. It, therefore, admonished the judicial committees and all parties and their counsels involved in such disagreements to co-operate fully with the house to settle the matters amicably.
This was contained in the speech of the President of the Northern Regional House of Chiefs, Nayiri Na Bohugu Mahami Abdulai Sheriga at the first ordinary meeting of the house in Tamale.
He also called on the Bimobas and Konkombas in the Bunkpurugu/Yunyoo District where there had been an intermittent conflict between the two ethnic groups leading to fatalities to use the appropriate bodies to resolve their dispute.
“I urge the factions and indeed all feuding communities to always use the appropriate institutions to settle their differences through dialogue and not arms. In this 21st century, people cannot and indeed should not continue maiming and killing to achieve their goals,” he indicated.
The president also appealed to the government and donor organisations for support for victims of the recent rainstorm disasters in the region. Some of the victims who lost their homes and property in the disasters had still not received relieve items.
Among the areas hard hit in the region are Gushiegu, Tamale,Tolon and Walewale where four persons, all women, also died. The storm revisited the Yendi town and its surrounding communities last week where it caused more damage to properties and displaced many. This followed an earlier one in the municipality about a month ago where it damaged more structures.
The Nayiri further observed that the rainy season would soon set in and, therefore, called on the government to offer the needed support to the people, whose mainstay is farming to till the land.
On the labour front, the president commended the leadership of the teacher unions for responding positively to call off their strike and stressed the need for further dialogue among aggrieved unions to forestall such strikes in the country.
“It is my hope that the employer and the workers unions would co-operate for a win-win situation,” he admonished.
