New technologies in agriculture introduced

International Fertiliser Development Centre (IFBC) based in Ghana and funded by the Dutch Government has introduced a deliberate but aggressive programme of securing the country’s agriculture industry with particular emphasis on vegetable production in rural areas.
Aim
The programme named, ‘2SCALE’, aims, among other things, at achieving sustainability of agriculture businesses through learning and promotion of entrepreneurship as a means of improving rural livelihood and food security.
Participants
More than 30 farmers nationwide, staff members of the Ministry of Agriculture, import companies and some selected non-governmental organisations (NGOs) have benefitted from the programme which involved five days of practical demonstration that went on at Offinso in the Ashanti Region.
Participants who took part in the programme were looked at attentively as the main actors in the value chain in agriculture right from the provision of improved seeds through to marketing and were introduced to new technologies in vegetable production.
Varieties
Among the improved seeds introduced at the worksop were padma and platinum types of tomatoes, Prema and Dayo kind of onions, good foe wet and dry seasons respectfully and Demo and Scotch Bonnet varieties of pepper.
Background
The 2Scale programme was designed to support public-private partnerships targeted at agri-food sectors and industries.
It offers a range of support services to private partners, companies and farmers and equips them to produce, transform and supply quality food products to local, national and regional end users.
From 2012 to 2014, 2Scale has developed a portfolio of 50 public-private partnerships in nine sub-saharan countries covering selected sectors in agriculture.
