The New Juaben State has suspended Nana Akwasi Adarkwa II as the Abesimhene of the traditional area.
Nana Adarkwa is said to have wilfully breached his oath of allegiance and shown gross disrespect to the Yiadom-Hwedie Stool and the New Juaben State.
“By this customary sanction, no person can now represent the Abesim Stool until the stool reverts to its status quo ante,” a statement jointly signed by Daasebre Professor (Emeritus)) Oti Boateng, the Omanhene of the New Juaben Traditional Area, and Baafour Nyantakyi Tutu Boateng, the Krontihene of the New Juaben Traditional Area.
It said the Abesim Stool could only revert to its status on condition that Nana Adarkwa absolved himself of the charges levelled against him or if another person was validly nominated and enstooled in his place.
Giving a background to the events leading to Nana Adarkwa’s suspension, the statement said Nana Adarkwa was summoned to appear before the New Juaben Traditional Council on October 4, 2013 to respond to charges of gross misconduct.
Nana Adarkwa, it said, allegedly stated that he would never appear before the council.
“After a thorough consideration of the matter, the council found the conduct of Nana Adarkwa to be totally against custom and a serious breach of the great oath he had sworn as Abesimhene to the Omanhene and the New Juaben State. The council further agreed that the conduct of Nana Adarkwa constituted gross disrespect and contempt not only to the Yiadom-Hwedie Stool but also the traditional elders and the New Juaben State,” it said.
The statement said the council affirmed that in swearing the oath of allegiance to the Paramount Stool and the state through the Fontomfrom, Nana Adarkwa had pledged himself to always obey the calling of the Omanhene and the state at anytime in the day or night, irrespective of whether it was raining or the sun was shining, except in sickness.
It said the council noted that Nana Adarkwa’s legitimacy as Abesimhene derived from his solemn adherence to the oath of allegiance which he had sworn to the Omanhene of the traditional area, stressing that it was that oath that Nana Adarkwa had breached.
“The council, therefore, decided to apply the customary sanctions by first putting the Abesim Stool in a non-functional mode and second, suspending Nana Adarkwa,” it said.
The statement said libation was poured by a linguist of the Omanhene and a sheep slaughtered in accordance with custom to consummate the decision of the council.
