The Minister for Communication, Digital Technology and Innovations, Samuel Nartey George, has urged ICT professionals to support the Girls in ICT programme, an initiative aimed at encouraging young girls to pursue studies and careers in technology.

In a Facebook post on Monday, January 24, 2025, the Minister stressed the need to bridge the gender digital gap and promote inclusion through programmes like Girls in ICT, which has been running in Ghana since 2012.

“The role of ICT professionals in mentoring and training young girls cannot be overstated. We must all contribute to ensuring that more girls develop interest and skills in technology,” he wrote.

The programme seeks to introduce girls to science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) subjects early, nurturing their interest in ICT.

It also offers mentorship and hands-on training to help them develop practical skills for the industry.

Another goal of the initiative is to improve access to digital resources and close the gap in technology use between boys and girls.

According to the Minister, more than 12,000 girls have received training in basic computing and other ICT-related areas under the programme, with plans to extend it to even more participants in the coming years.
