Mahama calls for sector-wide review to drive national development

President John Dramani Mahama has stressed the need for a comprehensive review of key sectors, including the economy, education, healthcare, and infrastructure, to ensure sustainable progress and development in Ghana.

He explained that such an assessment must balance sustainability with economic growth, recognising the country’s rich natural resources while addressing vulnerabilities like climate change.

Speaking at the 68th Independence Day celebration at Jubilee House, he highlighted the need for a thorough evaluation of healthcare, agriculture, food security, infrastructure, and urban development. He also underscored the importance of science, technology, and innovation in advancing Ghana’s green transition.

Reflecting on Ghana’s offshore oil and gas discoveries 18 years ago, Mahama noted that while they once promised economic transformation, recent years have seen poor policy choices and challenges. However, he urged the nation to maintain its ambition for rapid development.

"Our history is complex, marked by struggle, resilience, and renewal. But through it all, one truth stands firm—the unwavering will of the Ghanaian people ensures that no matter the twists and turns, our democratic spirit endures, and our destiny remains in our own hands," he stated.

He emphasised that each Independence Day should be a time for reflection on the legacy being built for future generations.

Mahama reminded Ghanaians that the current generation is merely a custodian of the nation’s resources, with the responsibility to manage them wisely for posterity.

Reaffirming his leadership commitment, he pledged to provide bold direction and a clear vision to navigate economic challenges while safeguarding Ghana’s future.
