Kotokuraba Market 85 per cent complete

Work on the construction of the Kotokuraba Market Complex in Cape Coast is 85 per cent complete.

The facility, which is expected to be completed in June 2016, will comprise shops, banks, hospitals and schools.

It will also have a car park, an office block, a drainage system and walkways to ensure the free movement of traders and customers.

During a visit to the site by the Minister of Local Government and Rural Development, Alhaji Collins Dauda, last Tuesday, workers on the site were seen working on the roofing and also plastering the walls.

The visit was part of the minister’s one-week tour of some districts. He was accompanied by the Cape Coast Metropolitan Chief Executive (MCE), Ms Priscilla Arhin, and some staff of the ministry.

Kotokuraba Market

Close to the Kotokuraba Market is a lorry station from where various buses and cars transport traders and their wares, as well as travellers, to different parts of the country.

As a result of this, there was congestion in and around the market, particularly on market days, before work started in August last year.

Impressive work

After touring the site, Alhaji Dauda said he was impressed with the progress of work and lauded the effort of the contractors, the China Railway Construction and Engineering Group, for working tirelessly to meet the deadline for the project.

He said the construction of the market was an indication of the government's commitment to improve economic activities in the region.

For her part, Ms Arhin said a committee would be put in place to ensure the effective distribution of the shops and stalls to the traders.

She called for unity among the traders to ensure fairness in the distribution process, as well as to achieve the goal of making the market a unique place for all.
