Ken Ashigbey lauds media's contribution to governance in Ghana

The Managing Director of the Graphic Communications Group Limited (GCGL), Mr Kenneth Ashigbey, has lauded the contribution of the Ghanaian media to democratic governance in the country.

He was contributing to the topic ‘Has the media helped or hurt governance in Ghana’ at media forum held to mark one year of former BBC broadcaster, Komla Dumor’s death.

The forum was held at the Accra International Conference Centre Friday.

Mr Ashigbey lauded the decisive role the media played in ensuring that Ghana transitioned from military rule to democracy in 1992.

According to him, Ghana did not have a parliament at the time, so it was the media that played the role of an advocate of democracy.

“It was the media really that galvanised everybody to ensure that we have what we have now”, he said adding that the absence of the media would have been disastrous.

He said 22 years on, the media was still doing very well to promote good governance although there were some challenges.

Mr ken Ashigbey said the state media, for instance was able to take on issues that it would not have dared to tackle some years ago.

He scored the media’s performance over the years 75 per cent, saying “There is progress going”.

The Graphic MD, however, stressed the need for the media to do more to live up to its mandate.

“There is 25 per cent that the media needs to do. But it’s a process rather than a destination.

“We need to be able to take on the issues that we need to take on,” he stated.
