Ghana has agreed to supply electricity to selected communities in the northern and eastern parts of Cote d’Ivoire.
A memorandum of understanding (MoU) to that effect has been signed between the Northern Electricity Distribution Company (NEDCo) of Ghana and CI-Energies of Cote d’Ivoire.
Under the agreement, NEDCo would extend electricity from Chache-Vonokoro in the Northern Region to Bouna in Cote d'Ivoire.
NEDCo would also supervise work on installed facilities, test and commission them, as well as operate and maintain the interconnectivity network within the Ghanaian territory.
The project will be funded by CI-Energies of Cote d'Ivoire.
Ghana’s Minister of Energy and Petroleum, Mr Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah, signed on behalf of the government, while the Minister of Petroleum and Energy of Cote d'Ivoire, Mr Adana Toungara, signed for the Ivorian government.
In a brief address at the signing ceremony, Mr Buah said the two countries could contribute immensely towards the economic growth of the West African sub-region.
"The production of about 80 per cent of the world's cocoa is between the two countries and this is a clear demonstration that we can join forces to effectively lead the region's poverty reduction strategy through successful co-operation," Mr Buah said.
He indicated that power exchange across the sub-region was set to improve tremendously, following the sub-regional interconnectivity project being developed from Cote d'Ivoire through Ghana to Nigeria.
"We in Ghana are hopeful that the signing of this MoU will lead the way for general prosperity of the two countries’ rural northern communities as we make strides as a country towards achieving a universal access to electricity," Mr Buah said.
Mr Toungara, for his part, expressed appreciation to the Ghana government for accepting to provide power to his country's rural northern communities.
"The agreement will bring light to the remote north and eastern parts of La Cote d'Ivoire which has been without electricity for over 50 years," Mr Toungara said.
