A.M.E Zion Church supports tidal wave victims

The Western West Africa Episcopal District Headquarters of the African Methodist Episcopal (A.M.E.) Zion Church has made a donation to victims of the recent tidal waves that ravaged several communities in the Ketu South Municipality in the Volta Region.

The donation included 150 pieces of five-kilogramme bags of rice, 200 crates of eggs, 15 cartons of cooking oil, 100 pieces of mosquito nets, 120 bowls of gari, 500 bags of sachet water, and some bales of used clothing worth approximately GH¢50,000.

The items were donated to the victims of the tidal waves at Agavedzi, Amutsinu and Salakope last Monday by a delegation from the A.M.E. Zion Church led by the Chairman of the Presiding Elders Council of East Ghana Conference, Rev. Felix E. K. Dodor, and the Missionary Supervisor of the Western West Africa Episcopal District, Cynthia Serwaa Dogbe.

Background

The recurring tidal waves, which started last month, destroyed several homes, cemeteries, schools and businesses, leaving many residents without decent shelter or livelihood.

The situation had drawn national attention with the President, John Dramani Mahama, and other government officials making donations and assuring the victims of a permanent solution.

The raging sea has destroyed over 200 homes and displaced over 1,000 people from the three affected communities.

The residents who depend on the sea have also lost their livelihood.

Relief

Rev. Dodor told the Daily Graphic that the donation was part of the church's humanitarian efforts to provide relief to those affected by the disaster, including church members residing in the three communities.

“We are deeply concerned about the plight of our brothers and sisters who have been affected by the tidal waves.

As a church, we are committed to providing support and relief to those in need.

“It is an expression of the love of Christ and the church towards the victims. Although we cannot provide a permanent residence or solution immediately, it is important that we sympathise with our people and use this opportunity to also encourage them and pray with them to be strong,” Rev. Dodor said.

He appealed to the government to expedite its promise to continue the sea defence wall to bring a permanent solution to the recurring tidal waves challenge, which has submerged hundreds of homes in the area.

The Assembly Member of Amutsinu-Salakope Electoral Area, Sylvester Kumawu, expressed gratitude to the A.M.E. Zion Church for the thoughtfulness.
