Ghacem promotes safety at workplaces

Ghacem Limited has held its annual Safety Week Durbar at its Tema and Takoradi plants to remind the workers of the need to prevent employee injury and ensure higher production and productivity.

Held on the theme: Zero Harm; Possible and Sustainable, several activities were held. These included a talk on healthy lifestyle, investigation of safety practices at the workplace, safety competition, training on emergency response and an aerobics session,

For championing the cause of safety and applying best practices in his line of duty, Mr Joshua Yankson of the Maintenance Department emerged the 2015 Safety Personality, while the coveted Near Miss Reporter Award went to Daniel Adom Botchway of the Production Department for having submitted 70 reports. Other departments which won various awards for promoting safety practices included Quality Assurance, Production and Marketing.

In his address, the Managing Director, Mr Morten Gade, applauded staff and departments which excelled in the various safety competitions and advised the employees to work towards achieving zero harm, expressing optimism that “it is possible and sustainable”.

He said as the company tried to maintain safety standards within its factories and quarries, the safety of all downstream activities such as transportation and warehousing of its products and materials should also be of utmost concern for all

“We need to care for each other; whether fellow employees, customers, suppliers or drivers. All deserve attention, alertness or intervention to avoid meaningless accidents. We all have a responsibility to fight unsafe acts and risk behaviour by stopping anyone acting in an unsafe manner,” he said

Mr Gade reaffirmed management’s commitment to go to any length to promote safety practices in its operation to protect human lives.

The Works Manager, Mr Eugene Laryea, urged the workers to reflect on the theme and be ready to work towards achieving it, emphasising that possibility starts from the mind “so have it in mind that it is possible,” he said.
