EPA plants trees to commemorate World Environment Day
The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), in partnership with the Seventh Day Adventist (SDA) Church, has launched a tree planting campaign for basic schools in the Ashanti Region. The tree planting crusade was undertaken to commemorate the World Environment Day.
The campaign was funded by both the EPA and the SDA and organised to inspire children to grow trees to protect the natural environment.
World Environmental Day
The EPA selected 27 basic schools mainly from the Presbyterian and Adventist educational units from the Kumasi, Konongo and Obuasi district assemblies for the tree planting exercise.
At the event, the Regional Director of the EPA, Mr Samuel Oteng, said in order to secure the future for upcoming generations, there was the need for conscious efforts to be made to preserve the ecosystem.

In selecting schools for the exercise, he said the agency took into consideration how effective the schools could ensure that the seedlings were looked after to grow well.
Mr Oteng said it was expected that all 27 schools that were selected for the exercise would plant a total of 2,200 tree seedlings.
He encouraged fellow Ghanaians to join the campaign, adding that “the future can be changed today”.
Appreciation
In separate interviews with the Daily Graphic, students of the Gyinyase SDA Primary and Junior Secondary Schools said they were grateful to the Environmental Protection Agency for educating them on the benefits of tree planting and how urgent it was that trees were planted to protect the environment.
The students interviewed were thankful to their school’s management for creating the platform from which they had received valuable information.
