He said the government would provide financial and technical support for agricultural institutions in the country.

He said further that agricultural institutions would be resourced adequately in order for them to play commanding roles in providing food for the people and raw materials for the industrial growth of the country.

Modern agriculture

The Ashanti Regional Minister said since Ghana was an agrarian economy, adopting technological innovation in the field was essential in widening the scope of students to meet demand.

Dr Sarpong, therefore, urged the college to “Move beyond the hoe and cutlass type of agriculture into mechanised agriculture”.

He said the government was appreciative of efforts by the Ejura Agricultural College to put in place structures that would train students in entrepreneurship skills and prepare them for the job market.

The Minister again commended the management and students of the college for venturing  into livestock production and also for putting up additional structures for their 3,000-bird-capacity poultry farm. Additionally, he commended the college for establishing a mushroom production unit, which he said was the only place in the area for the cultivation of mushroom.

“Good management is not about having all resources at your disposal. It is about being creative and committing to do the best out of the limited resources that you have,” he said.

Golden Jubilee celebration

The Principal of the college, Mr Robert Ayamba, spoke on the theme; “The Agricultural Training College: Empowering the Youth with Entrepreneurial Skills for Self Employment”.

He said the college would continue to  play a role in finding solutions to the youth employment situation confronting the nation.

In fulfillment of that vision, the college is focusing its training programmes on giving graduates training that would prepare them to become self-employed. he added

The Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) of the  Ejura-Sekyedumasi Municipality, Alhaji Muhammad Bawah Braimah, suggested a partnership between the private sector and the college to expand the Ejura Farms. He said  such a collaboration would create jobs for the teeming youth.

Present at the ceremony were the Kyidomhene of the Ejura Traditional Council, Nana Appiah Kusi Brempong II, the Ejurahemaa Nana Akua Tiwaa, parents and old students of the college.
