Custom brokers advised to be professional in their operations

Custom Brokers and other players in the freight forwarding business have been advised to be professional and guard against criminal activities that end up tarnishing the image of the maritime industry.

The Deputy Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Shippers’ Authority (GSA), Mrs Sylvia Asana Dauda Owu, gave the Advice at the  swearing-in of members of the Tema branch of the Customs Brokers Association-Ghana (CUBAG) in Tema.

 Importance

Mrs Owu said the work of custom brokers or custom house agents was very crucial in the fluidity of the supply chain and cost effective operations of businesses of importers and exporters.

She said it was therefore, important for CUBAG members to be professional in their activities to gain the confidence of shippers.

The deputy CEO also admonished members of CUBAG to operate within the negotiated charges agreed upon with the GSA so that there could be a fair, stable and cost—effective business environment to engender competition.

For his part, the Chairman of the Tema branch of CUBAG, Mr Emmanuel Valentine Gadzekpo, pledged to promote best practices in the association by ensuring regular training for members to protect both the custom brokers and customers.

 Background

The association was inaugurated on December 18, 1992 with the objective of engaging in clearing and forwarding business and disseminating information on international trade.

The President of CUBAG, Mr Daniel Kofi Asomaning, who leads the 10-member national executive committee, recounted the background of the association and urged members to desist from fraudulent behaviour.

He warned members that the executive members would not defend those who misconducted themselves.
