Cracked slabs pose danger to Anyanui-Torkor residents, traders
Traders and some residents of Anyanui-Torkor in the Keta Municipality in the Volta Region have raised concerns about the dangerous nature of the wharf there for ferries.
The concrete slabs of the wharf, constructed over 50 years ago, might collapse any moment because of the cracks they have developed.
On market days, women and other commuters from Techiman, Accra, Koforidua and Ada cart goods across the Volta River by ferry from Ada to sell at Anyanui.
Cracks
The Volta Regional Chairman of the Dragon Boat Raftin, Mr John Bessah Lumor, who is also a former assembly member of the area, conducted the Daily Graphic round various parts of the wharf and stated that the concrete slabs had developed cracks along the edges and the surface.

He pointed to six cracked points, with very deep holes.
On market days at Anyanui, many traders conduct their activities on the wharf.
Mr Lumor appealed to the Volta Lake Transport and the other authorities to quickly visit the site and rectify the problem.
When contacted, the Presiding Member of the Keta Municipal Assembly, Mr Richard Kwame Sepe, said the municipal authorities were not aware of the situation.
He, however, promised to visit the site to get first- hand information on the situation.
Construction of the wharf
A 75-year-old driver and former employee of the defunct Ghana National Construction Company (GNCC), Mr Henry Apetorgbor Garidikor who took part in the construction of the wharf, said the facility was constructed in 1963.
He said the wharf had not seen any major rehabilitation after its construction and added that the clay used in the construction was losing its strength.
