Asofan residents call on assembly to open police post
Residents of Asofan, a community in the Ga North Municipality in the Greater Accra Region, have appealed to the local assembly to, as a matter of urgency, inaugurate a newly completed police station to enable the police to fight crime in the area effectively.
The North Asofan Landlords Association constructed the police station through communal contributions and handed it over to the assembly to furnish it.
However, more than three months after the work has been completed, the building to house the police station remains locked due to lack of power and water connections to the facility.
The Chairman of the North Asofan Landlords Association, Mr Kwame Ofori, said the residents decided to construct the police station to move the law enforcement personnel from a makeshift 40-footer police post.
He said the project was also to enable the police to respond to the high incidence of crime in the area and also improve the poor conditions under which the police operated.
Handicapped
Mr Ofori explained that the association started the construction of the structure in 2016 and completed it last year, but was handicapped so could not furnish the building, hence they sought help from the municipal assembly.
He said the assembly responded and helped the association tile the floor, put in some furniture, a counter and other items.
Power, water
When contacted, the Municipal Coordinating Director of the assembly, Dr Ahmed-Rufai Ibrahim, pointed out that the delay in inaugurating the new police station was due to the absence of electricity and water connections to the structure, adding that the assembly had already paid for the connection fees of the two utilities.
He said the assembly had requested the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) to urgently connect the new police station to the national grid.
Dr Ibrahim hinted that the assembly had plans to construct a borehole in the interim to supply water to the facility.
