1,000 Girls undergo two-week ICT training

The Ministry of Communications (MoC) has begun a two-week training in Information and Communications Technology (ICT) for 1,000 girls in 12 Districts of the Northern Region, as part of its “Girls in ICT Programme”.

The Programme being implemented by the government, in addition to sensitising and empowering girls to step up ICT usage among them, seeks to demystify the study of the subject so that girls are not left behind in the digital world.

The training exercise, being held simultaneously across the 12 districts including Central Gonja, Bole, West Mamprusi, Sagnarigu and Tamale Metro, will see the participants acquire knowledge on specialised ICT software.

Community Information Centres at the districts are serving as the lesson centres for the training.

The Director of Research Statistics and Information Management at the Ministry, Madam Patricia Dovi Sampson, who opened the training in Tamale on Thursday, urged teachers of ICT to adopt strategies to teach the subject so as to generate a lot of interest among the girls.

She, on the other hand, advised the participants to take the study of the subject as fun and not to feel intimidated by it.

An ICT competition among participants has been scheduled to climax the two-week long training on the 26th of April, which coincides with “Girls ICT Day” celebration.

The occasion is an awareness-raising initiative designed by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) to pay tribute to women's contribution to the technology careers to whip up the interest of the new generation of girls in Science and Mathematics.
