St Louis 94/96 year group donates to alma mater

The 1994-96 year group of the St Louis Senior High School Old Students Association (SLOPSA) has handed over a 1,000-seater dining hall to its alma mater.

The dining hall, which cost GH¢400,000 to build, was presented to the school in Kumasi as part of activities marking the 25th homecoming anniversary of the 94-96 year group.

The homecoming ceremony was held on the theme: “Celebrating our past, preparing for future challenges”.

In an interview with the Daily Graphic, the President of the year group, Ms Serwaa Amo Mensah, said with support from the 1986 year group in particular and other old students, the group was able to complete the project within a year.

Lydia Osei Dining Hall

The dining hall was named after a former Headmistress, Ms Lydia Osei, who was the school head when the group was in school.

Ms Amo Mensah said the facility was named after the former headmistress to honour her for the role she played in their lives as a mother and mentor during their time in school.

She has become the first person who is not an old student of the school to have a facility named after her.

Ms Osei expressed her gratitude to the school administrators and the year group for honouring her.

“Thanks so much for the honour done me. I am happy to see this while still alive. I am very proud of you all,” Ms Osei said.

Appreciation

The Headmistress of the school, Ms Ama Kyerewaa Benefo, expressed her appreciation to the year group and appealed to them to help build more dormitories to accommodate the increasing number of students.

The Metropolitan Archbishop of the Kumasi Diocese of the Catholic Church, Most Rev. Dr Bishop Justice Yaw Anokye, entreated other year groups to emulate what the 1994-1996 year group had done.

Background

A sod for the construction of the dining hall was cut in September last year.

Activities undertaken as part of the homecoming anniversary included a mentoring session with past students in various professions, entertainment night and a durbar, while a thanksgiving Catholic Mass was held to climax the celebrations.
