2016 Junior Graphic spelling competition launched

The 4th edition of the Junior Graphic fun clubs spelling competition has been launched in Accra.

The event held at the Early Bird Bchool at Taifa-Burkina Thursday saw three schools compete for a place at the next stage of the competition.

Participating schools for the first stage of the spelling competition were Perpetual Help School, New Achimota, Early Bird School, Taifa-Burkina and the Falsyd Foundation School, Achimota.

Launching the event, the Editor of Junior Graphic, Mrs Mavis Kitcher said the focus of the paper was to produce content that will help Junior High School (JHS) students to pass their Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE). She said the Junior Graphic has provided a reliable platform for students to consult to solve some of the difficult examination questions they may come across.

She observed that although the paper proves useful to primary and junior high school students, once the students enter the Senior High Schools (SHS), they no longer find it appealing to read, a situation she attributed to a lack of content that caters for SHS readership.

She disclosed that an SHS content specific newspaper is in the offing and will help SHS students in their academic development as well as life in general.

She reiterated Graphic Communications Group Limited (GCGL's) commitment to students, adding that the variety of newspapers produced by the company notably Graphic Sports, Showbiz, The Mirror, Graphic Business, Junior Graphic and the Daily Graphic will help students to acquire the necessary knowledge as they go through life.

She advised the students to keep away from bad friends and make reading a lifetime companion. She noted that students feel frustrated when they are unable to pass their examinations and thus fail to gain admission to their schools of choice.

Consequently, she encouraged the students to develop their reading skills in order to perform very well in their examinations.

Addressing the students, the head of marketing at ECOBANK, Mr Kasser Tee encouraged the students to cultivate the habit of saving.

Doing that, he said, will enable them purchase the necessary learning materials that may not be readily available to them from their parents and guardians.

He expressed gratitude for being a sponsor to a worthy cause that will help students not only to sharpen their reading skills but to acquire knowledge that can only be found in books and other literature.

He said as part of the ECOBANK’S social responsibility programmes, their key focus areas are health, education, employment generation and helping the underprivileged in society.

After a keen spelling competition between the participating schools, Falsdy Foundation School won with 60 points. Early Bird School placed second with 31 points and Perpetual Help School placed third with 28 points.
