    The country’s digital transformation agenda took a significant leap when President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo launched the fifth generation (5G) mobile network service in Accra.

  • 2024 Elections test of Ghana’s democracy — UN Special Representative  

    The Special Representative of the United Nations (UN) Secretary- General and Head of the UN Office (UNOWAS) for West Africa and the Sahel, Leonardo Santos Simao, has said this year’s general election will be a serious test of the strength of Ghana’s 30-year-old democratic process. 

    “This is because the elections are being organised in an environment marked by regional security challenges, misinformation and disinformation that spread quickly on social media, and the erosion of political enthusiasm among the youth,” he explained.

    The envoy said socio-economic hardships; rising inflammatory statements and hate speech by some members of the public also contributed to the challenges facing the electoral process.

  • EC opens up ballot paper printing to media with tour

    In a major step towards promoting transparency in the electoral process, the Electoral Commission (EC) has opened up the process of printing ballot papers for the December 7 polls to the media.

    Ghanaians will go to the polls on December 7, this year, to elect a President and 276 Members of Parliament, and in preparation for that,  a team of officials from the EC yesterday led journalists to some of the printing companies, where they were given access to the production rooms to observe the printing process, an exercise the EC said was the first time. 

    Although it is being printed by six companies, the EC's team, led by the Deputy Commissioner in charge of Corporate Services, Dr Eric Bossman Asare, took the media to three of them — Buck Press, Innolink and Acts Commercials Ltd.

    The appeal follows series of road accidents that have claimed over six lives between May and October this year in front of the hospital due to the absence of speed humps.

    The latest tragedy involved a registered nurse who was hit by a speeding vehicle after completing her shift.

    The presidential candidate for the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama, has expressed concern over the state of Ghana’s democratic institutions, claiming they have been severely undermined under the current Akufo-Addo-led administration.

    He argued that the strides Ghana has made in strengthening its democracy since 1992 have been reversed.

    “These last eight years have been very challenging for our democratic institutions. All the gains we have made in strengthening them since 1992 have been eroded,” he stated.

    Mr. Mahama made these comments during a governance forum in Accra on Thursday evening, October 31, 2024.

    Google has announced that Twi, one of Ghana's most widely spoken languages, is now available on Google Voice Search, Gboard talk-to-type, and Google Translate voice input. 

    This inclusion is part of Google’s expansion of African language support, which now covers 15 new languages across the continent, enhancing accessibility for over 300 million people.

    Developed in collaboration with Google's AI Research Center in Accra, this update enables Ghanaians to search, type, and translate directly in Twi using voice commands. This integration will allow millions of Twi speakers to interact naturally with technology in their native language.

  • Transport operators refute reports of fare increases, urge public to ignore claims

    Transport operators in Ghana have clarified that there is no increase in public transport fares, urging the public to disregard recent media reports claiming a 15 percent hike. 

    In a press release issued today, the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) and the Ghana Road Transport Coordinating Council (GRTCC) condemned the reports as misleading, suggesting that they could be part of a deliberate effort to stir discontent among commuters.

    "Our attention has been drawn to news going around in some media houses headlined ‘Transport Operators announce 15% increase in fares effective 2nd November,’” the statement read. 

  • NPP’s John Kwame Duodu calls for issue-based debate between Bawumia and Mahama

    The First Vice Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Atwima Nwabiagya South Constituency, John Kwame Duodu has criticized former President John Mahama for his recent comments directed at the NPP and Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia. 

    Mr. Duodu condemned Mahama’s remarks, particularly the phrase “It’s about the economy, stupid,” a slogan famously used during Bill Clinton’s campaign, calling it “distasteful” and inappropriate for the nation’s political discourse.

    "I least expected such unpalatable statements from the former President and NDC flag bearer, considering his stature in Ghanaian politics,” Duodu stated. 

    He pointed out the calls from Ghanaians and civil society organizations for “issue-based campaigns devoid of such negative tendencies that have the potential to mar the calm political atmosphere.”

    Former President of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), Kwesi Nyantakyi, has filed a defamation suit against sports journalist Dan Kweku Yeboah and some media platforms demanding GH₵10 million in damages. 

    Nyantakyi claims the defendants made “reckless and defamatory” allegations that have harmed his reputation and caused him significant personal distress.

    He filed the suit on October 28, 2024 and it is specifically pointing to statements made by Dan Kwaku Yeboah on radio on Peace FM’s morning programme.

    The grand finale of the National Science and Maths Quiz (NSMQ) 2024 was held at the New Examination Center, University of Cape Coast between Mfantsipim School, Keta Senior High School and St. Augustine’s College. 

    This year’s NSMQ was held at Cape Coast, which is widely taunted as the citadel of education in Ghana. 

    Historically, formal education in the Gold Coast started in Cape Coast, the ancient capital of Ghana, with Philip Quaque School. 

    At the inception of the competition, Central Region, which hosted the event for the first time kept their hopes high by chanting host and win.
