The Bank of Ghana (BoG) has unveiled its headquarters, The Bank Square, in Accra, setting a new standard for financial sector infrastructure in Ghana. 

Commissioned on November 20, 2024, by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, this landmark facility embodies the Central Bank’s vision of innovation, sustainability, and excellence.  

Hundreds of commuters were stranded on the Cape Coast to Kumasi highway for several hours following a truck accident last Sunday.

It was a heavy-duty truck carrying an ECG power engine, which was traveling towards Kumasi from Cape Coast that fell on a truck and a private car, severely injuring the driver of the truck which was carrying charcoal.

The road was blocked immediately after the accident and commuters spent between five to six hours before crossing.

Our Central Regional correspondent, Shirley Asiedu-Addo reported that the accident happened at the Assin Darmang Ngresi section of the Cape Coast-Kumasi road.

A pensioner has been dragged to the Accra Circuit Court for allegedly impersonating his late brother to sell a plot of land.

According to police prosecutor, Chief Inspector Princess Tetteh Boafo, Roland Ababio allegedly posed as his deceased brother to facilitate the sale, with Kwame Gyane Ababio acting as an intermediary.

Ababio, together with his alleged accomplice, Kwame, has been charged with conspiracy to defraud and defrauding by false pretence.

Some customers of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) using NURI Prepayment Meters have been unable to recharge their meters for the past 48 hours, causing widespread frustration. 

The issue is linked to an ongoing emergency upgrade of the NURI Prepayment Meter system, announced by ECG on November 18, 2024.  

When we assumed office in 2017, the education sector was burdened by a significant debt, outdated curriculum and inadequate infrastructure. Access to quality education, particularly at the secondary level, remained a challenge.

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo on Tuesday officially opened the newly constructed Flower Pot Interchange in Accra to traffic marking the completion of the infrastructure project aimed at easing traffic flow between key parts of Accra. 

The Flower Pot Interchange, which began construction in 2017, is to enhance connectivity between the northern and southern areas of the Accra-Tema Motorway, greatly benefiting commuters in areas such as Cantonments, Burma Camp, East Legon, Spintex, and Tema.

An international arbitration tribunal in London has ruled decisively in favor of the Government of Ghana in its legal dispute with Ghana Community Network Services Limited (GCNet).

The tribunal rejected GCNet's claims and awarded Ghana $2,185,983.21 in legal costs, comprising $1,744,050.42 for legal representation and $441,932.79 for expert witness fees.

President Nana Addo Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo yesterday commissioned a 200-megawatt Ghana Bridge Power Plant at Kpone, near Tema, in the Greater Accra Region.

 
The project constitutes the first phase of a 515MW bridge power plant owned and developed by three parties: Endeavour Energy Limited, a leading US independent power development and generation company focused on West Africa; General Electric (GE) Vernova, a world leader in gas turbine technology, and a Ghanaian partner, Andaris Energy, an independent energy trading company, at an estimated $1.2 billion.

The Ashanti Regional House of Chiefs has launched a a three day activity to celebrate the 100 years of the return of the Asantehene, Otumfuo Sir Osei Agyemang Prempeh I from exile in the Seychelles Island. 

The three-day activity will begin on Friday, November 22, 2024 with a symposium.

Nigeria's National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has intercepted 50,000 pills of Tramadol 225mg smuggled from Ghana into their country in a major anti-drug trafficking operation.

The Daily Post reports that the pills were concealed in the body compartments of a Toyota Hummer bus allegedly belonging to GUO Transport Company. The vehicle, driven by a suspected trans-border trafficker, was intercepted last Saturday, November 16, at Ijanikin along the Lagos-Badagry Expressway.  

The incumbent National Democratic Congress (NDC) Member of Parliament for the Amenfi Central Constituency, Peter Yaw Kwakye Ackah, who was aggrieved and decided to contest the 2024 Parliamentary election as an independent candidate following his inability to secure the party's nod for another term in office has withdrawn from the race.

He has subsequently thrown his support for Joana Gyan Cudjoe, who is contesting the 2024 Amenfi Central parliamentary election on the ticket of the NDC.

A statesman and retired accounting and business advisory expert has recommended a total ban on surface mining, including alluvial mining, in the country.

The presidential candidate for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama, has accused the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) of deception, pointing to promises of giving each constituency $1million each year as something which has not been fulfilled.

Addressing NDC supporters at a rally in Kyebi in the Abuakwa South Constituency in the Eastern region on Monday, Mr Mahama asked the gathering if the constituency had received its share of the promised $1 million. 

About 6,200 jobs have been created through the successful implementation of the first phase of the Gulf of Guinea Northern Regions Social Cohesion (SOCO) project in the six beneficiary regions.

The jobs include 3,800 unskilled labour, 2,000 skilled labour and 426 community facilitator roles.

The beneficiary regions are Upper West, Upper East, Northern, North-East, Savannah and Oti.

The chiefs and people of the Nkonya Traditional Area in the Biakoye District of the Oti Region have made a passionate appeal to the government to revoke the curfew imposed on them and the Alavanyo Traditional Area over the years. 

They made the appeal following the peace and tranquillity experienced in the two traditional areas in the past seven years.

When I entered Form One at Opoku Ware School some 45 years ago last month, we were only 192 in my year group, with the school’s total population hovering just a little over 1,000 or so.

Today, annual admission figures are around 1,300 for schools of the same size, with the school population around 4,000. 

As the national population has increased over the years and with it the number of qualifying students seeking admission to our schools, along with the allure of the Free Senior High School (SHS) programme, demand has far outstripped supply at many of our senior high schools. 

Former President John Agyekum Kufuor has urged Ghanaians to be moderate in criticising key state institutions.

He said a cautious critique was crucial to maintaining the dignity of those democratic bodies such as the Executive, Parliament and the Judiciary.

In an interaction with selected journalists last Sunday, the former President stressed the importance of showing respect for Ghana’s democratic institutions.
