The Grammys “Highlife category” will be won by Nigerians if... -Bullgod
Artiste Manager and entertainment critic, Hanson Nana Asiamah popularly known as Bullgod has cautioned Ghanaians about the possibility of Nigerians winning the new Grammy Best African Music Performance category by producing more highlife tunes.

In a Facebook post earlier today (June 14) Bullgod wrote, “The “Highlife Category” that has been introduced by the Grammys will be won more by Nigerians than Ghanaians — if…”
Bullgod's comments come on the back of Highlife music recognised as part of relevant African music styles for the Best African Music Performance category at this year's Grammys.
The Best African Music Performance category is one of the three new slots that have been added to the 2024 edition of the prestigious awards scheme. The other two are the Best Alternative Jazz Album and Best Pop Dance Recording.
Apart from Highlife music, the popular Ghanaian drill spearheaded by the Asaaka boys from Kumasi was mentioned as a music style for the Grammy Best African Music Performance category.
The latest news is quite reassuring for promoters of Highlife who have been advocating for global recognition for the genre.
Last year, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Recording Academy, Harvey Manson Jnr. Disclosed the scheme’s intention to get the right representation for African music when he visited Ghana.
“Best African Music Performance’ category as “a track and singles category that recognises recordings that utilise unique local expressions from across the African continent.
Highlighting regional melodic, harmonic and rhythmic musical traditions, the Category includes but is not limited to the Afrobeat, Afro-fusion, Afro Pop, Afrobeats, Alte, Amapiano, Bongo Flava, Genge, Kizomba, Chimurenga, High Life, Fuji, Kwassa, Ndombolo, Mapouka, Ghanaian Drill, Afro-House, South African Hip-Hop, and Ethio Jazz genres,” the category definition states.
The new development has intensified conversations about the potentials of Highlife music and its global impact as had been championed by Highlife musicians.
Describing it as the best news he has heard, Rex Omar said he was certain many musicians will now switch to Highlife.
“This is the best news I’ve heard in a very loooonnnngg time, I swear now everyone will become a highlifer in GH,” he wrote on Facebook yesterday (June 13).
