Celebs not doing enough for society

Although some Ghanaian celebrities have been undertaking various social responsibilities by giving back to society, award winning Hiplife artiste, Kwaw Kese, believes those noble deeds are not enough because celebs have the capacity to impact society more.

For the man who hails from Agona Swedru in the Central Region, although the society plays a significant role in ‘moulding’ these stars, their contribution back to the society is nothing to write home about.

To him, celebrity status should have a deeper meaning and a sense of responsibility than just driving flashy cars and living extravagant lifestyles.

“Our people look up to us and we must use our status to bring good omen to our country”, the ‘Abodam’ man told Showbiz in an interview last Tuesday.

He has, therefore, challenged such public personalities to take up front seats in pushing developmental projects in the society since that is the only way their significance and influence can be beneficial to the country.

“I know that most of my brothers and sisters are already on the path of bringing hope to the needy and spearheading some important projects through the various established foundations but for me, I think the contribution is minimal. We can do some more,”he added.

Giving reasons for advocating for what he calls the “Change Agenda”, the multiple award winning musician recalled many experiences where he had been hailed like a god due to his celebrity status.

“I had a different perspective about life when I landed in jail. Truthfully, though I was down, I was so inspired by the special treatment my inmates meted out to me. That was how I realised how my lifestyle could affect millions of people.

“This is a passionate call that I believe will do all of us good when we put in more efforts. I’m a street boy and I’ve had the privilege of interacting with people and it’s surprising how celebrities are seen as mini gods. That is the kind of influence we have and so we not ‘abuse’ that”, a passionate Kwaw Kese told Showbiz.

Currently, the GMA 2008 Artiste of the Year, is living his dream of contributing his quota to the development of society with the establishment of his foundation which aims at administering a-20-year-Development Project for Ghana’s prisons and to educate the public on substance abuse.

Real name, Emmanuel Botchwey, Kwaw Kese, released his debut album Abodam in 2007.
