3 In Yam Festival hockey tournament

Three hockey teams, two of them from Accra, will converge on the Ho Sports Stadium on Saturday for the first of what is expected to be an annual hockey festival in the Volta Region's capital.

Citizens International and Golden Sticks, both of Accra, will be guests of Ho Stadium Hockey Club in Saturday's all-play-all tournament originally planned as part of activities to celebrate the annual Yam Festival of  the people of Asogli state in the Volta Region.

Sylvanus Ameko, technical director and head coach of the host club, told Daily Graphic that he expected the competition to give hockey a real boost in the Volta Region.

The 56-year-old, who led the Volta Regional team to silver medal at the 2012 National Unity Games in Accra, where they fell to Greater Accra, has donated a giant trophy which will be competed for on annual basis.

"We hope to enlarge the competition to accommodate teams from other parts of the country. At least, we are hopeful that teams from Suhum and Koforidua in the Eastern Region will join next year's tournament," he said.
