Commodities make marginal gains

Some commodities made marginal gains last week. The highest gain of three per cent was made by cowpea and maize with an olunka of cowpea been sold at an average price of GH¢7.40 while maize was sold at GH¢4.50 per olunka.

Tomatoes and wheat, however made losses of nine and one per cent respectively to close the week under review.

The price of fresh tomatoes continue to drop in some markets last week. A “medium size tomato tin” full of fresh tomatoes sold at GH¢13.25 dropping 31 per cent in Accra.

In Kumasi it dropped 24 per cent to close the week at GH¢7.00. Techiman experienced an 11 percent decrease to close at GH¢10.00, with Takoradi also losing six per cent to close the week at GH¢14.40.

The commodity however gained 22 per cent in Bawku to close the week at GH¢12.00. Dambai also gained 11 per cent to close last week at GH¢9.00.

There has been some significant price decreases in some markets which has been attributed to the stable supply of the local tomatoes from the growing areas such as Tuabodom, Akumadan and Navrongo.

An olunka of maize gained five per cent in both Accra Takoradi to close the week at GH¢5.00 and GH¢5.70 respectively. Dambai also gained 11 per cent to close the week at GH¢5.00.

Maize

A 100kg bag of maize for the second continuous week gained 6 percent in Accra to close the week at GH¢190.00 with Tachiman gaining three per cent to close the week at GH¢150.00. Dambai also made a gain of 11 percent to the week at GH¢196.00 from a previous price of GH¢176.00.

A kilo of maize gained 5 percent both in Accra and Takoradi to close the week at GH¢2.00 and GH¢2.20 respectively. Dambai also gained 11 percent to close the week at GH¢2.00.

Tomato (Fresh)

A crate of tomatoes continued its decline in some markets this week. The crate dropped 32 per cent in Accra to close the week at GH¢510.00 from a previous price of GH¢750.00. In Techiman it dropped 14 per cent to close the week at GH¢350.00 with Kumasi dropping two per cent to close the week at GH¢210.00.

Bawku and Takoradi however made some gains. Bawku gained 14 percent to close the week at GH¢205.00 and Takoradi gainig seven per cent to close the week at GH¢450.00. A kilo of tomatoes was sold at GH¢7.36 dropping 31 per cent in Accra. In Kumasi it dropped 24 per cent to close the week at GH¢3.93.

Techiman experienced an11 per cent decrese to close at GH¢5.60, with Takoradi also losing six per cent to close the week at GH¢8.00.
