Ghana beat Rwanda in U-19 cricket tournament in Lusaka
After losing to hosts, Zambia and Tanzania at the ongoing International Cricket Council (ICC) – Africa Cricket Association (ACA) and Cricket World Cup Qualifying Series (CWCQ) Division 2 Tournament in Lusaka, the Ghana U-19 cricket team bounced back strongly to defeat Rwanda who occupy the top of the table in grand style in their fourth game.
It was Team Rwanda that won the toss, batted first and succeeded in netting a score of 112 runs for 10 wickets in 39 overs.
It was also an indication of an improved bowling performance, in that, the score was made at the rate of 2.8 runs per over.
Determined to make an impact on the game, captain Clement Ateak bowled superbly, grabbing five wickets for seven runs and, supported by Judah Ankrah, made addictional two wickets for 23 runs.
This was in response to the game plan of their opponents as Team Ghana made 112 runs, steered the innings through equally tight Rwanda bowling , but managed to win the match by scoring 116 for the loss of seven wickets.
It was Michael Aboagye who proved too tough for his opponents and scored for Ghana with 35 runs, followed by Clement who made 22 runs , making victory a certainty.
The victory must have given the cricket team a gleamer of hope as they prepared to meet Mozambique at Leopard Hill Cricket Oval at the time of going to press yesterday.
The two defeats suffered by Team Ghana placed them third on the table behind Rwanda and Tanzania, with Swaziland and Mozambique occupying the next two places.
The competition started last Saturday and was scheduled to end yesterday. Two officials -Messrs Henry Benjamin Ackom , team Manager, and F. Kofi Bakiweyem, the coach , accompanied the team, which comprised 14 players.
