Cricket: GCA amends constitution for more reps
The Ghana Cricket Association (GCA) has amended its constitution to enable more representatives from regional associations with good standing to attend its future congress and deliberate on issues that would generate more interest in the sport.
At its Annual General Meeting (AGM) held at the conference hall of the Theodosia Okoh Hockey Stadium in Accra, the members unanimously endorsed a proposal from the national president, Professor William Ampofo, to amend Article 12, subsection 12.5 a, of the GCA constitution.
It states that delegates forming the quorum for the GCA AGM should be composed of a delegate each from the Northern and Southern sectors of the country but the new amendment indicates that “ one delegate each from any regional cricket association attested by the GCA Executive Board and who is in good standing “ can attend their annual congress.
Addressing the delegates during the congress, Professor Ampofo urged them to adopt and use the constitution as a working document to avoid haphazard development of the sport in Ghana.
He expressed concern about the slow pace of growth of the sport in Ghana and said unlike soccer, which had become very popular and played in every part of the country, cricket had been tagged as a minority sport.
Prof. Ampofo said because of the tag, it had become difficult for the Executive Board to source for the needed financial support from the sector Ministry to promote the sport across the country.
He said it was very important for members to encourage the youth in their respective communities to take to the sport as a way of popularising it.
“ You should make it a duty to run cricket clubs in your communities to encourage the youth to take keen interest in this noble sport ” he appealed.
Professor Ampofo also urged the members to make it an agenda to promote the teaching of cricket at basic and second cycle institutions .
The Chairman of the Africa Cricket Association (ACA), Mr Kwesi Sagoe, took the members through the scope of presentation of the ACA, the relationship between the ACA and the International Cricket Council (ICC) as well as the recent developments at the ICC.
