Gyan eyes fourth World Cup

Black Stars skipper Asamoah Gyan is hoping to play in his fourth FIFA World Cup and says he want to stay fit and in form to help Ghana reach the 2018 World Cup in Russia.

Despite their first round elimination in Brazil, the Stars’ promising outlook serves as encouragement for 28-year-old Gyan, who is Ghana's most-capped player in World Cup history with 11 games and six goals to his credit.

The Al Ain striker made his World Cup debut in 2006 and scored Ghana’s first World Cup goal against the Czech Republic in 82 seconds — the fastest goal of the tournament.

His determination to play in his fourth successive tournament cannot be underestimated.

“No doubt about it,” Gyan said about his Russia 2018 target.

“The fact is we’ve got a very young team, we’re still learning and we have a great future ahead of us.

“I’m one of the most experienced players in the team and I know we can come back and take the world by storm, just like we did in 2010. We’ve definitely got the talent to do that.”

In Brazil, Gyan became Africa's all-time leading goal scorer in World Cup history after scoring in Ghana’s 2-1 defeat to Portugal which took his tally to six [he scored three goals at the 2010 tournament in South Africa], eclipsing the previous record held by Cameroun legend, Roger Milla.

“Obviously I’d love to play in another World Cup,” he told ghanafa.org.

“I’m 28 and I’m hoping to maintain my form over the next four years. If we qualify for Russia, it goes without saying that I want to be there. I hope God can protect me from injuries.”
