Amefu is new wrestling president
He also revealed that he was liaising with some corporate entities to sponsor wrestling tournaments across the country and also support the structures of the sport.
“As an Olympic sport, we are far behind, but we are slowly catching up. I will ensure that we become one of the most cherished disciplines in the country, create awareness of wrestling as a venture for providing jobs for the youth and a source of revenue for the state,” he stated minutes after being endorsed as the new president with 13 out of 15 votes at the Media Centre of the Accra Stadium last Saturday.
Mr Amefu, who stood unopposed, saw one person rejecting his candidature, with one absentee, at an elective congress supervised by the immediate past president, Dzaga Ameyi, and Mr John Kennedy Koranteng from the Electoral Commission.
Amefu, who was the immediate past vice-president of GWA, is a former national taekwondo star. He is expected to bring his expertise to bear on the association.
He will be assisted by the newly-elected vice-president, Daniel Kovor, who polled 12 votes, and Wisdom Bensah, who also secured 12 votes to emerge as the treasurer.
Three persons were also elected as executive members: Armah Haruna Ashietey, who had 13 votes; Aminu Lartey, who garnered 10 votes, and Titus Alika, who polled nine votes.
Mr Koranteng later swore the new executive into office and tasked them to work diligently for the betterment of Ghana wrestling.
Mr Ameyi also advised the new leaders to take wrestling to greater heights and recruit more talents for Greco-Roman Wrestling— the unique wrestling style recognised by the International Olympic Committee (IOC).
