Police secure injunction against demonstrators

The Accra Regional Police Command has secured a court injunction restraining the Let My Vote Count Alliance (LMVCA), the Alliance for Accountable Governance (AFAC) and the Movement for Change (MFC) from picketing at Parliament House and the Electoral Commission (EC) as part of their planned demonstration on a new voters register scheduled for today, September 16, 2015.

Last week, the three groups wrote to the police about their intention to organise a demonstration to demand a new voters register for the 2016 general election.
The police, however, rejected their demand to converge on Parliament House and the headquarters of EC to present their demands, citing security concerns, and proposed an alternative route for the group to consider.

The organisers, however, insisted on using their intended route and also to converge on the two places. That prompted the police to seek a court injunction to prevent the group from going ahead with their plan.

According to a press release signed by the Public Relations Officer of the Accra Regional Command, ASP Effia Tenge, the proposed route ordered by the court is from Obra Spot, through the Ghana Commercial Bank Tower on the Kwame Nkrumah Avenue to the Farisco Traffic Light, the headquarters of the Trades Union Congress (TUC), the head office of the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO), the Atta Mills High Street and finally the Accra Hearts of Oak Park.

The statement further called on the organisers of the event to cooperate with the police to ensure a peaceful event.
