NPP meets to review committees

A meeting by the Steering Committee of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), was yesterday held to review and reconstitute the five statutory committees of the party.

The meeting, which lasted for more than six hours, finalised a  decision on the deputies for the General Secretary, Women’s Organiser, and National Organiser which will be presented to the National Council for approval.

The five statutory committees are the Finance and Administration; Constitutional; Research and Elections; Disciplinary; and Organisation.

The replacement of Mr Kojo Opare Hammond as the Director of Finance and Administration with Mr Edward Tetteh generated some controversy, with Mr Hammond describing the action of  the  newly elected National Executive as  dictatorial.

He said the action was, therefore, unconstitutional.

Soon  after Mr Hammond’s  case  the party was about to convene its second  National Council meeting, when  the party and the National Chairman were hauled to an Accra Fast Track High Court with an interim injunction not to hold the National Council meeting because  there should have been regional elections first  to elect regional representatives to the National Council.

Since this has been complied with and the regional elections held, the way has been paved for the National Council Meeting next week, according to party sources.

The steering committee meeting, which was chaired by the National Chairman, Mr Paul Afoko, was therefore, expected to finalise its decision on the appointment of deputies to General Secretary, National Women Organiser and National Organiser for approval by the National Council.

However, people were tightlipped, concerning the review and restructuring of the communications department to make it more responsive now that the party was functioning at almost full capacity.

The review and reconstitution, when completed, will pave the way for the Vetting Committee to meet soon.

The Vetting Committee is made up of the five statutory committees, the chairman of the Council of Elders, and three members selected by the national chairman of the party, one of whom will be the chairman.

Also, two members of the vetting committees shall be women.
