NDC youth join fight against Covid-19 in Volta Region
The Volta Regional Youth Wing of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has adopted ‘Operation Protect The Youth’ to educate the public on how to stay safe from coronavirus disease (COVID-19) in the region.
The programme saw the youth of the party storm the streets of Ho and Hohoe to distribute about 2,200 nose masks to residents especially the youth, the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU), the Progressive Transport Owners' Association (PROTOA) and Cooperative Transport Unions and traders at the Ho market while educating them on some basic safety protocols.
The regional youth wing seeks to distribute 20,000 nose masks in especially the three main COVID-19 hotspots of the region such as Aflao, Ho and Hohoe by the end of the initiative to help curb the spread of the pandemic.
Education
Speaking to the Daily Graphic, the Regional Youth Organiser of the NDC, Mr Mathias Alagbo aka Kabila, said the youth wing had realised the need to educate the people in the region on the seriousness of the pandemic.
“We need to support the education on the importance of strictly adhering to the dos and don’ts such as handwashing, physical distancing, use of sanitisers, among others in the fight against the pandemic which cases are increasing on a daily basis,” he said.
He said people must be made to know that they have to take personal responsibility for their wellbeing.
The spread of the virus in these three areas, he said, was worrying and therefore everybody must contribute his or her quota in the fight against the pandemic.
“As a token of seriousness that we attach to the exercise, everywhere we go we produce a standard locally manufactured nose mask for free distribution. It is to support persons, especially the youth, who may want to use the mask but don’t have money to buy them,” he added.
Awareness
Mr Alagbo said it was the youth wing’s expectation that the initiative would create more awareness by conveying to the people the seriousness of the pandemic and the need to follow basic safety protocols.
‘We also want to use the initiative to show the people that we are a responsible opposition party and we care for them especially in this trying period,” the regional youth organiser indicated.
He further disclosed that executives of the various constituencies had been tasked to also implement the initiative at the local level to reach a large number of people in the region.
